What we record, and why
When you play, the game records what you do in it: where you go, what you fight, what you buy and sell, which quests you take, how you die. We use that to:
- Fix bugs (most bugs show up as a pattern in what happened just before),
- Balance the game (is a fight too hard, is a trade too good),
- Improve the characters you play alongside (the companions and other computer-controlled characters learn from how people really play),
- Let the world remember. Your deeds become part of your realm's history: the people of the realm remember what you did, tell each other about it, and the biggest moments are written into the realm's chronicle.
The line you see when you sign up says it in one breath: "We record what you do in the game, like where you go and what you do, to fix bugs, balance the game, improve the characters you play alongside, and let the world remember: your deeds become part of your realm's history. We don't record your chats unless you report someone. Details: privacy page."
What we don't record
- Your chats. We don't record what you say to other players. The one exception: if you report someone, the report includes the few lines of chat around it, so we can act on it. That snippet is kept only while the report is being handled.
- Voice. Never.
- Anything outside the game. We don't look at your computer, your other programs or your browsing. Crash reports include only what's needed to fix the crash (game version, the error, your graphics card and system type).
Who you are vs what you do
Your email address, payment details and anything that identifies you as a person live in your account, kept separately. The game's records of what you do are tied to an account number, not to your name or email. Internet (IP) addresses are kept only in our login security logs, for 30 days, and never in the game records. To stop one person playing two accounts at once, the game also keeps a random id for your game install (not your hardware's serial numbers), stored scrambled and deleted with your account.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Detailed play records (every event) | 14 days |
| Summaries (per session, per day, per game system) | 12 months |
| Compressed archive of play records | 12 months, then deleted |
| Login security logs (including IP address) | 30 days |
| Game-install id (multibox check) | As long as your account |
| Chat attached to a report | While the report is handled |
| Your realm's memory of your deeds (what the world remembers) | For the life of the realm (see below) |
Your choices: download or delete
- Download your data: email [email protected]. You get your account details, the summaries of your play, and what your realm remembers about your characters.
- Delete your account: email [email protected]. We delete your account and everything that identifies you. Detailed play records tied to your account are deleted; summaries and the archive keep no link back to you.
- What the world keeps: the world's memory is part of the game other people are playing in. If a hero saved the mill, the mill was saved. So when you delete your account, the realm still remembers the deeds, but as "a stranger": no name, no link to you.
We answer download and deletion requests within 30 days. This applies wherever you live, and covers your rights under laws like the GDPR (Europe/UK) and the CCPA (California).
Selling and sharing
We don't sell your data. We don't share it with advertisers. Our hosting and payment providers process data only to run the service for us.
Age
The game is for players 18 and over during beta.
